On Sunday, June 17, we’ll be learning about pest management plus how and when to thin fruit to increase healthy crops.  The mulch is doing a great job, but we’ll also be going after the morning glory and other weeds, so come on down to the Sabin Community Orchard at NE Mason, between 18th and 19th.

Questions? Please contact intern@portlandfruit.org.

New SCA Board of Directors

5/31/2012

by Austin Peterson

On May 14, at the Spring General Meeting, local residents elected a new Sabin Community Association Board of Directors. The “changing of the guard” will take place on July 1.  I am pleased to say that this new board is as capable and committed as ever to continuing to make Sabin a wonderful place.  At the same time, it saddens me to say that I have decided to step down as president to spend more time with my family. My time on the board has been both challenging and rewarding, and I urge everyone to get involved in the neighborhood association system. It’s a great way participate in worthwhile projects and work with a group of smart, dedicated people. I am excited and proud of the work we have done, but there is definitely plenty left to do.

New Board Members:

President: Hector Roche
1st Vice President: Gwenn Baldwin
2nd Vice President: Clay Veka
Secretary: Barbara Conable
Treasurer: Naomi Pusch
Communications Chair: Diane Benson
At Large Members: Michelle Ganow-Jones, Rachel Lee, Bill Youngren, Cara Fry, Joshua Curtis, David Sweet, Don Rouzie

Sabin Community Orchard Work Party a great success!

On May 20, dozens of neighbors and orchard supporters came out to celebrate the orchard and enjoy great food and music. The How Long Jug Band kept toes tapping, while we created stepping stones, made sidewalk chalk art and built a fairy house beneath the large cherry tree. Volunteers, staff and orchard stewards from the Portland Fruit Tree Project were on hand to lead orchard tours and share the history of the orchard. A raffle and certificate donated by Acadia Bistro helped raise funds for our new interpretive signs. Many thanks to all who came, created and donated their time and talents!

Sabin Front Garden Walking Tour

5/4/2012

by Diane Benson

This year, we're organizing a self-guided front garden walking tour, with a special focus on bee-friendly gardens. We'll hold a kick-off event on June 30, with samples of bee-friendly plants, bee-centric art projects for kids and bee experts on hand to answer all of your questions about bees. As the big day approaches, we'll share more details about the kick-off event.  In the meantime, whether your front garden is particularly bee-friendly or not, we hope you'll participate or help organize the tour. If you'd like to participate, please contact Diane or Barb. And, don't forget to check out the Garden Tour tab on the Sabin website to learn more about creating a bee-friendly garden.
